Coretta Scott King award is only one of the many awards Copper Sun has won, but it is a very important and recognized award.
Setting of Copper Sun
Copper sun takes place in many places but the most important places are Amari's Ashanti village, the middle passage on the boat, and the Derby shire Farms. The first setting takes in Amari's Ashanti village. The Ashanti village is surrounded by fruit trees and her neighbor villagers. It has paths of hard packed dirt, made from the people before her and everybody is friends with everybody. She said in the book she liked the smell of the fires in front of the small huts they lived and fresh air blowing through the trees, the ones her brother liked to climb. The next setting of the book is the Middle Passage boat ride. The boat she rode on during the Middle Passage was absolutely horrible. This is where some of her worst memories are made. She is shackled and shoved in a dark room with many other women and children that she has never even met, and is rarely let out. It's cold and damp, she has very little to no food, and has barely any clothing whatsoever. But this is also where she makes one of her greatest friends that she will remember forever. The last and most important setting is the Derbyshire Farms. This is where most f the story will take place. This is also where she makes some of her greatest friends and memories. It is a plantation ran by Mr. Derby and they grow rice. She gets a little house to live in and she is served real food, but not like what she is used to eating. It has a very nice, big, and fancy plantation home that she gets to work inside of every once in a while. But she spends most of her time in the kitchen helping Teenie and Tidbit cook for the Derby's.
