Copper Sun's Characters
Amari (Later Myna)
Amari is one of the 2 main characters of the book. She is the strong African slave that shows the horrors of slavery. She shows her journey through slavery and how she learned to survive. She is sold to the Derby shire Farms to Mr. and Mrs. Derby and their son Clay Derby. She is then renamed to Myna.
Besa (Later Buck)
Besa is Amari's soon to be husband and lives in her village. He is the one who spots the slavers and also becomes a slave after capture from the slavers. He is passed from owner to owner and then later sold to Ms.Fiona O'Reilly's husband, Patrick O'Reilly, and then Besa is renamed to Buck.
Afi
Afi is the strong slave woman who endured the horrible conditions of the middle passage with Amari. She is the one who keeps Amari full of hope during their journey and is the one who is there when Amari endures her worst nightmares. Amari claims she probably wouldn't be alive if Afi wasn't there with her.
Polly A.K.A Polly-girl
Polly is the little blond indentured servant that is sold to Mr. and Mrs. Derby to pay off the indenture that her parents had owed. She later becomes Amari's best friend.
Teenie
Teenie is the slave cook at Derby shire Farms and is Mr. Derby's most trusted slave. She always is the one who introduces the children and teenagers to life on the plantation, and is the mother of young tidbit. She has a big heart as well as a big voice.
Tidbit (Later Timothy)
Tidbit is the child of Teenie and has a little dog named hush puppy. He is very silly and just loves to be a little kid. He is always laughing and smiling and is just pure crazy. He becomes best friends with Polly and Amari always makes everyone laugh. He is very curious and like to make his life fun.
Mr. Derby
Mr. Derby is the owner of Derby shire Farms. Mr. Derby has absolutely no heart and is rude and horrible. He is someone who believes in slavery and could care less about fairness and politeness. His common punishment to slaves that misbehave is to whip the slaves till they bleed to death. He is the husband of Mrs. Derby and the dad of Mrs. Derby's firstborn child. He is the father already of Clay Derby. He owns Amari, Teenie, Polly, Tidbit, and many other slaves.
Mrs. Derby
Mrs. Derby is the wife of Mr. Derby. She has a heart and does not mistreat the slaves like her husband does but does have a sharp tongue to use when a slave treats her with disrespect. She has a personal slave that sees to her and is name is Noah. She carries Mr. Derby's child and lives on his plantation. She sometimes tends to the slaves after they get whipped and or punished by Mr. Derby.
Clay Derby
Clay Derby is the selfish son of Mr. Derby and he is just like his father. As they say like father like son. Amari is originally purchased for his sexual wants. He rapes her many times and he shows her off like she is some grand prize. He is incredibly rude and greedy, and very selfish. He has a very obvious hatred towards his step mother Mrs. Derby.
Amari looked up at a seabird flying above and remembered her little brother. I wish he could have flown that night, Amari thought sadly. I wish I could have flown away as well.

Minor But Important Characters
Cato
Cato is the crazy slave that slave that works for Mr. Derby in the rice fields. He likes to tell stories of places in Spanish territory with roads paved of gold and of a place where slaves can be free, IF they can make it there. He calls it Fort Mose. ( Pronounced MO-ZAY)
Dr. Hoskins
Dr. Hoskins is basically the town doctor. He makes house calls or you can just go see him. He doesn't believe in slavery and he is also known to be a terrible liar..
Nathan
Nathan is a little red haired boy who finds Amari, Tidbit, and Polly on their adventure and helps them not get caught. He doesn't believe in slavery but his father does.
Fiona O'Reilly
Fiona O'Reilly is another person whoo help the travelers on their journey. She favors buckskin for clothing, which her husbands hunts for her. She doesn't believe in slavery, but her husband Patrick does.
Domingo Salvador (Spanish Solider)
Domingo Salvador is the Spanish solider the group encounters on their journey.
Ezni
Ezni is the woman they meet when they arrive at Fort Mose. She introduces them to everyone and makes them feel welcome.
Captain Menendez
Leader of Fort Mose- he is a runaway slave that made in through the ranks of the Spanish Army after escaping from his slave owner.
